Safe & Sound Protocol (SSP)

The Safe and Sound Protocol (SSP) is a gentle listening therapy that uses specially filtered music to support the nervous system in returning to a state of safety and balance. Developed by neuroscientist Dr. Stephen Porges, creator of the Polyvagal Theory, SSP is designed to improve emotional regulation, social engagement, and overall wellbeing for children, adolescents, and adults.

I offer SSP as a licensed practitioner with Divergent Life, guiding you through the process with care and at a pace that feels safe.

What SSP Can Support

Many people find the SSP helpful when experiencing:

  • Anxiety and low mood

  • Trauma-related symptoms

  • Emotional dysregulation

  • Auditory sensitivities or processing difficulties

  • Inattention and focus challenges

  • Misophonia (sensitivity to certain sounds)

  • Social communication difficulties

  • Conditions such as fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue, or IBS

How It Works

The SSP uses therapeutic sound frequencies to gently stimulate the vagus nerve — a key part of the autonomic nervous system. By engaging this pathway, the body can shift from a defensive state (fight, flight, or freeze) into a calmer, more regulated state.

It works through:

  1. Filtered Music: specially processed tracks that are soothing and adapted for sensitive nervous systems.

  2. Vagal Stimulation: sound that supports the body in moving toward safety and balance.

  3. Social Engagement: by settling the nervous system, SSP helps make it easier to connect with others, regulate emotions, and feel safe in relationships.

What to Expect

The protocol usually takes place over several sessions (from a few days to a couple of weeks), with each session lasting around an hour. We begin together in a quiet, comfortable setting with headphones, and I guide you gently through the process.

For some, this may remain a supported experience; for others, the protocol can later be used independently.

Every plan is customised, especially for children, trauma survivors, or those with sensory sensitivities. The emphasis is always on safety, steadiness, and moving at the right pace for you.

The SSP is more than a listening programme. It’s a way of helping your nervous system find calm again, opening the door to better regulation, deeper rest, and safer connections with others.
